Anterior uveitis in a kitten infected with Toxoplasma gondii (Tehran strain)
Authors
Abstract:
Ocular lesions are a common manifestation of toxoplasmosis in cats. In this survey, 10 healthy Syrianmice were infected through intraperitoneal inoculation of bradyzoites of Toxoplasma gondii (Tehran strain).Mice were killed 30 days after inoculation and the suspension of their brains was prepared, after confirmationof the infection. Seven kittens were fed with the infected mice brain suspension. The kittens were 2.5–3months old and had body weights of 650–900 g. All kittens shed oocyst 7–8 days after infection, and hadantibody titers as high as 1/320–1/1280 30 days after the challenge. Serum chemistry and complete bloodcount were determined in all of the kittens. Examination of eyes was done with ophthalmoscope twice duringone week. Only one kitten showed unilateral anterior uveitis on day 16 after the infection was diagnosedbased on serology, oocyst shedding and other clinical signs.

This research was done as a case-control study on women who referred to the treatment centers in cities of Kermanshah and Ilam ...
full textSeroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii Infection in Dogs in Tehran, Iran
BACKGROUND Toxoplasma gondii infects a wide range of animals; felines are definitive hosts and other animals including the dogs are intermediate hosts. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in dogs in Tehran, capital of Iran and to investigate possible associated risk factors. METHODS Three hundreds ninety six serum samples were collected during 2007...
full textToxoplasma gondii impairs memory in infected seniors.
Almost 30% of humans present a Toxoplasma gondii positive antibody status and its prevalence increases with age. The central nervous system is the main target. However, little is known about the influence of asymptomatic i.e. latent Toxoplasmosis on cognitive functions in humans. To investigate neurocognitive dysfunctions in asymptomatic older adults with T. gondii positive antibody status a do...
full textInhibitory effects of Clindamycin on shedding of Toxoplasma gondii oocyst and its comparison with Monensin in kitten
The efficacy of Clindamycin and Monensin were evaluated in the prevention of oocyst shedding of kittens with Toxoplasma gondii (Tehran strain). In this study, 28 healthy kittens aged 1.5 – 2 months old divided randomly into 4 groups of seven. In group 1, Kittens were fed with the infected brain tissues of mice, all of seven kittens (100 %), shed oocyst, nearly 1 week after infection, which la...
full textFatal attraction in rats infected with Toxoplasma gondii.
We tested the hypothesis that the parasite Toxoplasma gondii manipulates the behaviour of its intermediate rat host in order to increase its chance of being predated by cats, its feline definitive host, thereby ensuring the completion of its life cycle. Here we report that, although rats have evolved anti-predator avoidance of areas with signs of cat presence, T. gondii's manipulation appears t...
